As the local press has reported, the Public Market’s efforts to secure our long-preferred site, the Federal Building at 511 NW Broadway, were superseded by the Pacific NW College of Art's successful bid for an educational use transfer, an option not available to the Market. Many people have asked whether or not this signals a hiatus -- or even a conclusion -- to the on-going planning for the Market.

The straightforward answer is "No."

First, the Market continues to build on its recent successes:

  • A licensing agreement with the James Beard Foundation for the perpetual use of the James Beard Public Market name
  • A Davis Hibbitts Migdall poll showing 61% support for building a year-round Public Market in Portland
  • Increased awareness of the importance of the Market among local decision-makers
  • An enduring relationship established with Melvin Mark Development Company

Second, at their March 24th meeting, the Market’s board of directors unanimously agreed to intensify their efforts to engage Portland in creating The James Beard Public Market.

Third, our site selection committee is continuing to investigate both new opportunities and previously overlooked locations in light of Portland's changing demography and food-buying habits.

Your support of these efforts will be most welcome! Please talk with friends and neighbors about the importance of the full-time, year-round James Beard Public Market, and share your ideas by emailing Ron Paul at ron@rpaulconsulting.com. Successful Public Markets define and nourish their city's soul. Certainly Portland is not without a soul but we have a missing link between this most European of Western cities and the bounty of its nearby agriculture. A connection is forged when urban shoppers know the source of their food supply and come together to celebrate the simple, edible transactions of daily life.
